This men's crochet hat pattern free comes with the matching men's scarf crochet pattern. They complement each other very well.
The hat is worked bottom up, working the ribbing first, then the body of the hat.
Skill level is Advanced Beginner
Use any yarn that you prefer. The hat is made with a medium weight size 4 yarn. Use the recommended hook. Hook 4mm & 4.5mm was used.
For an accurate head measure, you need the full head circumference. Use a tape measure around the forehead, keeping it tight. Then divide that number by 3.14 and round up or down to the nearest quarter to get a good crown measurement. For example, if the head measures 21, here is the math:
21 divided by 3.14 = 6.68 rounded to 7
For the length, measure from the center of the head down to the bottom of the ear. Consider what your hat brim will look like and make the necessary adjustments.
Crocheted hats are stretchy and have some give which allows for less importance on precise measurements.

Stitches used:
Using smaller needle work rib in sc.
1. Work 10 chains. 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in next 8 sc. Ch1 Turn
2. Sc in blo of each sc to end. Ch 1. Turn. 3.
Repeat row 2 until desired rib size is reached. 4.
Use sl st to join two ribbing or use a needle to whipstitch the two ends together.
Changing to the bigger needle for hat body.
Work sc evenly around to end up with multiple of 4. Sl st to join to first sc.
1. 3 dc in 4th ch from hook. {Skip 3 ch. 3dc in next ch} to end.
2. Chain 3. Turn. In 3 chain space work 1dc. 1 dc in the middle 3 chain below. (bring dc to the height of previous dc. 1dc in 3ch space.
Repeat Row 3 until size of the hat is achieved.
Work 1sc2tog around until the hole is the size of a penny. Cut yarn with 10 inches. Thread needle with the yarn and sew up the hole.
