Gauge is not crucial because you will be measuring the hat as you go. It is easy to make the hat's crown by increasing each row until you reach the size you want. Then, work the side of the hat in whatever pattern you like.

All of these stitches are easy beginner stitches.
It is nice to begin hats with a magic loop because you can cinch up the hole very tight, eliminating a space. Learn how to make the magic loop here if you don't know how.

However, it would be best to mark the end of the rows to keep track of the increase.

Using the landscapes self-striping yarn, you get a beautiful hat without changing color. However, do not use this yarn if you are a total beginner. It could be challenging to unravel if you make a mistake.
