Easy Crochet Hat Patterns that are Quick to Make

These easy crochet hat patterns are all made from the top down.

Gauge is not crucial because you will be measuring the hat as you go. It is easy to make the hat's crown by increasing each row until you reach the size you want. Then, work the side of the hat in whatever pattern you like.

All of these stitches are easy beginner stitches.  

It is nice to begin hats with a magic loop because you can cinch up the hole very tight, eliminating a space. Learn how to make the magic loop here if you don't know how.

Yarn: Lion Brand Vanna Style Red (approx 210 yards) or medium size 4 yarn

Needles: 4.0 MM

Skill Level:  Beginner

Hat Measures:  22" x 9".

Stitches used:

  • Chain (ch)
  • Slip Stitch (sl st)
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc)
  • Double Crochet (dc)

Ch 3 at the start of each row counts as a dc.

Begin with a magic loop.

Row 1.  Ch3. 11 dc in ring. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of 1st 3 ch. (12 dc)

Row 2.  Ch 3.  2 dc into each dc around. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of 1st 3 ch. (24 dc)

Row 3.  Ch 3. 1 dc into the same space as sl st. 1 dc into next dc. {2 dc into next dc, 1 dc into next dc} around. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of 1st 3 ch. (36 dc)

Row 4.   Ch 3. 1 dc into the same space as sl st. {1 dc into next 2 dcs,  2 dc into next dc} around. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of 1st 3 ch.(48 dc)

Row 5.   Ch 3. 1 dc into the same space as sl st.  {1 dc into next 3 dcs,  2 dc into next dc} around.  Join with sl st to 3rd ch of 1st 3 ch. (60 dc)

Last increase row

Row 6.   Ch 3.  1 hdc into same space as sl st.  {1 hdc into next 4 dcs,  2 hdc into next dc} around.  Join with sl st to 3rd ch of 1st 3 ch. (72 dc)

Row 7.   Ch 2.  1 hdc into same space as sl st.  {1 hdc into each dc} around.  Join with sl st into 2nd ch of chain 2.

Row 8-15. Repeat row 7.    

Use a stitch marker to mark where you are starting row 15.    

Row 15- 26. Ch 2. 1 hdc into same space as sl st.  {1 hdc into the back loop only of each stitch} around.  Do not join at the end of the row. 

Row 27.  Ch 2.  1 hdc into same space as sl st.  {1 hdc into each dc} around.  Join with sl st.

The Alamo Hat is considered a slouchy hat. 

You make this easy crochet hat pattern in one continuous round without joining at the end of rows.

However, it would be best to mark the end of the rows to keep track of the increase. 

Yarn: 1 ball of Lion Brand Landscapes Coral Reef (147 yds) or medium size 4 yarn

Needles: 4.0 MM

Skill Level:  Beginner

Hat Measures:  20" x 8.5".

Using the landscapes self-striping yarn, you get a beautiful hat without changing color. However, do not use this yarn if you are a total beginner. It could be challenging to unravel if you make a mistake.

  • Chain (ch)
  • Slip Stitch (sl st)
  • Single Crochet (sc)
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc)
  • Double Crochet (dc)
