Baby Hat Crochet Pattern. Make this in 3 hours or less.

This baby hat crochet pattern is unisex.  It is made here in pink, but you could easily make it blue or brown for a boy. The design is easy for a beginner. It works up quickly and does not use lots of yarn. 

The pattern is worked in the round and uses a bottom-up approach. Cinching up the top is easy because the design changes to single crochet, which is very easy to decrease. 

 Skill Level:  Beginner

Yarn:  No 2 Baby yarn. Approx 250 yards

Needle:  3.5 & 3.75mm

Additional tools Required:  Tape measure, scissors, darning needle.  

Gauge:  20 stitches in 4 inches single crochet.

  • Single crochet (sc)
  • Slip stitch (sl st)
  • Half double crochet (hdc)
  • Double crochet (dc)
  • Back loop only (blo)
  • Half double crochet 2 together (hdc2tog)

Rib for The Baby Hat Crochet Pattern

When making rib, work the last sc of the row in both loops. This creates a neater, more durable finish. 


1.       Ch 6. 

2.       1 sc in  2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each ch to end. Ch 1. Turn.

3.       1 sc in blo of each sc to the end. In the last stitch, work sc in both loops. 

Repeat Row 3 until the desired length is achieved.

Join both ends of the rib with slip stitch or sew it together with a needle.  

Body for The Baby Hat Crochet Pattern

1.        1 hdc at a regular interval around the rib. Make sure to end with a number divisible by 2. Join with sl st to first hdc.

2.        Ch2.  *1 dc in next stitch.  1 sc in next stitch* around.  Join with sl st to first dc. 

3-9.    Continue working row 2  for next 6 rows.

10.     Change color to white.  Work row 2 once more.

11.     Change color.  Work row 2 once more. 

12.     Change color to white.  Work row 2 once more. 

13.     Change color.  Work row 2 once more.  

Start decrease.

14.  Ch 2.  *1 hdc in next 10 stitch.  1 hdc2tog over next 2 stitches* around.  Join with sl st to first hdc.

15.    Ch 2. 1hdc in in each stitch around.  Join with sl st to first hdc.

16.   Repeat Row 14. 

17.   Ch 1.  *1 sc in next 10 stitches.  1 sc2tog over next 2 stitches* around.   Join with sl st to first sc.

18-27.  Repeat row 17 9 times

19-28.  Ch1. *1 sc2tog over next 2 stitches* around.  Join with sl st to first sc. 

Hole should be approx. the size of a penny. 

Cut yarn with 9 inch to spare.  Use needle to further cinch up hole. 

Weave in ends.
