The sew-up crochet hat is perfect for children as well as adults. Male or female can wear it.
It looks nice with the brim rolled up, so make allowance for this when calculating the hat length.
This hat is made by crocheting a rectangular piece of fabric and then using a darning needle to sew it into a hat shape. It is quick and easy but not recommended for a beginner crocheter. This is because beginner crocheters could have difficulty keeping the rectangle shape. In addition, you need to take care counting the stitches in each row, and the long rows could be problematic.
Yarn: Use any yarn that you prefer. If making a baby hat, use baby yarn. Use a medium (4) or bulky (5) when making the hat for an adult.
Needle: Use up to 1mm smaller needle than the recommended needle size for the yarn
Other Things you Will need:
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
Approach: Flat Rectangular Crochet Fabric is sewn up into the shape of a hat
Special Instructions: This sew-up crochet hat is worked in rib stitch. You may use single crochet, half double crochet, or double crochet to make your rib. This instruction uses half double crochet.
You must make the rib stitches in the back loop only (blo). However, for the last stitch of each row, crochet in both stitches. This gives a neater finish and makes the fabric edge sturdier.
Measure around the forehead to get the width of the hat and from the center crown to the forehead to get the length. Remember to add more inches for the upturn brim. If you don’t have an actual person to measure, use this hat measurement chart.
Stitches used:
These are the turning stitches for the other stitches that you may use.
Repeat row 3 until you reach the desired width.
Sew up the fabric length. Next, thread needle and yarn at regular intervals around the top and cinch up. Secure the yarn and weave in ends.
Look. You made something beautiful.
