The waffle stitch crochet pattern makes a modern textured, dense fabric with no holes. It looks like a breakfast waffle. Very three-dimensional.
It is an easy pattern that is beginner-friendly. It is much easier than it looks, and it works up quickly and is an interesting and fun pattern.
Use this crochet stitch pattern to make hats, blankets, washcloths, dishcloths, scarves, cushions. You can use it anytime you need a dense, warm design.
It looks especially interesting with several color changes too.
The waffle stitch crochet pattern is made with a collection of stitches. Two Double Crochet (dc) surrounded by front post double crochet (fpdc) and/or back post double crochet (bpdc). Chains or standing double crochet are used to start the rows.
Usually, it is a two-row repeat that is very easy to keep track of once you get its hang.
You can work the pattern into a square, a circle, or flat, back and forth. You could even make granny squares and stitch them together. This is where the versatility comes in.
Even though some of the instructions require you to turn your work each row, it is a one-sided pattern where the waffle shows clearly on one side and not the other.
This stitch is a yarn eater because it does use up a lot of yarn. So if you are doing a large project, make sure that you buy enough to finish your project.
Use any yarn that you prefer. Some Chunky yarn may be challenging to work with because they are already bulky. So working this bulking stitch may prove a bit tricky. It is not impossible, though. I am sure someone will produce a very nice result with a chunky yarn to prove me wrong.
Use this waffle stitch crochet pattern to make a square fabric of any size. It can be a child or adult blanket, a washcloth, a dishcloth, or anything else your creative mind allows.

The pattern is worked in the round. You will work on both sides of the blanket, turning at the end of each row. One side will show the waffle pattern. This is the right side.
Begin with a Magic Loop.
Row 1. Chain 4. {2 dc, ch 1} 3 times, 1 dc.
Pull circle tight.
Sl st into 3rd chain of the first 4 chains.
Row 2: Chain 3. Turn work to work on the wrong side.
1 fpdc around next dc.
1dc, ch 1, 1dc in chain space.
{2 fpdc around each of next 2dc. 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc in chain space} 3 times. Sl st into the top of 1st fpdc.
Row 3. Turn to other side. Sl st into the 1ch space. Chain 3. 1dc into same space.
{side: 1 fpdc around next fpdc. 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc. 1 fpdc around next fpdc}.
{corner: 2 dc 1 ch 2dc in next space}. Repeat side, then corner 3 times.
Repeat Side. 2 dc in corner, chain 1. Sl st into 3rd chain of 1st 3 chain.
Row 4: Turn to the other side. Sl st into the 1ch space. Chain 3, 1 dc in next space.
{side: (1 fpdc around next 2 fpdc. 1 dc in dc) 2 times. 1 fpdc around next 2 dc}
{corner: 2dc, ch 1, 2dc}.
Repeat side, then corner 2 times.
Repeat side. (skip over the first chain 3). 2dc in the corner. Sl st into 3rd chain of 1st starting 3 chain.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until you reach your desired size.
Do fpdc around fpdc and regular dc around regular dcs around. So corners always have 2 dc, ch1, 2dc.
To get you started, here is the pattern for the 5th row:
Row 5: Turn to the other side, ss into the 1ch space. Chain 3. 1dc into same space.
{side: (1 fpdc around next 2 fpdc. 1 dc in next 2dc. 1fpdc around next fpdc) 3 times. }
{corner: 1fpdc around each of next 2 fpdc, 2dc, ch 1, 2dc in next space}.
Repeat side, then corner to end. Chain 1. ss into 3rd chain of 1st 3 chain.
Here, you can see the Waffle developing very nicely.
Continue working pattern until you reach the desired size.
Remember to come back and show us your work.
